Alexander von Halem, the castle's owner in second generation, was born in the United States but grew up in the castle's Franconian village of Zeilitzheim. As a dual German/American citizen he spent quite a few years in the United States where he served as a graphic artist in the United States Air Force and as an Armor (Cavalry) officer in the United States Army. He holds an AAS degree in audiovisual production from the Community College of the Air Force, an AA degree in liberal arts from the University of Maryland and a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy with a minor in art history from the University of Colorado (Colorado Springs).
In 1998 he returned to Germany to run the hotel together with his mother, Marina von Halem (nee baroness von Richthofen), and his Hungarian wife, Katalin von Halem. Alexander and Katalin have two children, Katharina (2005) and Isa (2007). Having been brought up in an international family that is still scattered around the world, Alexander is always happy to receive friends and hotel guests from around the world. In his little free time, Alexander likes to keep up to date with developments in social networking and blogging (see blogs, below). |
